Coome out of your comfort zone
I tried something today which I have not attempted for over 40 years - participation in a (scratch) choir for a public performance. Needless to say the results were mixed but it really stretched me not becuase I could not do it but because it made me try. This made me think about SME leaders - they are always having to try and do new things which are outside their experience. That's why having a mentor makes so much sense. Having someone to help you overcome your nerves and contribute "how-to" ideas is just what is needed.

End of BusinessLink
The announcement that BL is to be terminated - at least in its current format - reminds me of my mentoring accreditation under the old - previous but 2 - version of BL. Mentoring could and should have a new vogue in the current climate, where people in work fel the pressures of greater burdens as staff cuts apply but still need new skills and support. A few hours with a trusted mentor can do wonders to build both know-how and confidence in a changing world; and needs only a small outlay for big return. And it does not need Government intervention!

Dependency
Among the risks businesses face, ICT failure may seem minor but since experiencing what I must hope and assume to be a temporary one, I realise just how dependent we can become on digital media. When the system works, we take for granted the speed and convenience of e-mail and the Web. When it does not, we become blind and mute. Yet somehow, we may regard those professions solely communicating by letter and printed brochure as outmoded. We must make sure that wehen we do risk analysis, we at least allow oursleves to fall back on the old ways if not espousing them as our norms. Like good manners, there is still a place for them until proven otherwise.

Benchmarking about the economy
In attending an industry Board, I took the opportunity to ask how different sectors are facing the expected continuing downturn. Cost-cutting is almost universal to protect margins; and presenting the market with more affordable products is wide-spread. Good sense.
